Will my Social Security benefit increase next year? - The Help Desk ...

Will Social Security get a raise in 2013? ? Gary B.

The Social Security Administration just announced a cost of living adjustment (COLA) of 1.7% for 2013. The increases will take effect on Dec. 1, 2012 and will appear in benefit payments starting Jan 1, 2013.

The COLA allows Social Security benefits (as well as federal and military pensions) to keep pace with inflation so the buying power of those payments holds steady. "It's a way of ensuring that retirees can maintain a reasonable standard of living," says Cristina Martin Firvida, AARP's director of financial security and consumer affairs. These adjustments are calculated every year based on increases in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W), a monthly index that tracks the rise in cost of consumer goods and services in selected urban areas. It's often argued that the CPI-W does not fairly track cost-of-living increases specific to seniors, but that's the index that the government uses.

In 2010 and 2011, the Social Security Administration determined that there was no effective uptick in the CPI-W, and, accordingly, declined to implement a COLA. This year, by comparison, saw a COLA of 3.6%.

How to recover data from a dead or erased hard drive

3 hrs.

Q. I?have a hard drive with valuable information on it, but I can't seem to access it???the drive is either damaged or erased. Is there any way I can see what's on the drive and get it off??

Don't worry, we're not going to ask where you got the drive, but there are plenty of ways to examine it and see if any of the data is recoverable. With a little time, the right tools, and some care, you may be able to get some data off of that drive.

Step one: Assemble your tools and examine the drive's condition
The first thing to do is make sure you have the tools required to connect this drive to another computer safely. Ideally, you'll have some kind of SATA/IDE to USB cable or USB drive enclosure or sled that you can mount the drive into and connect it to your computer easily. Sure, if you have a desktop and like getting your hands dirty you can try to install the drive as an internal one, but an external connection is faster and easier.

Next, take a look at the drive itself. Is it damaged in any way? Are the pins bent or broken? Make sure that the drive is in good enough condition to actually use before you try anything in the first place that may damage it even further. If the drive is too physically damaged to attempt recovery, you may need more drastic measures that we'll get to later. If everything looks good and you have the equipment required to connect the drive to your system, we can proceed.

Step two: Grab some data recovery software and connect the drive
Before you do much else, make sure your antivirus and antimalware tools are up to date. You don't know what you'll find on this drive, and you don't want it to start misbehaving once the drive is connected to an active system. Once you've done that, it's time to download and install some data recovery tools. Here are a few we love:

Recuva (Windows, Free): Personally, Recuva has been indispensible. Made by the same folks behind CCleaner, Recuva makes data recovery simple and easy. if you're only interested in browsing and restoring selected files off of the drive, Recuva is a great option. Alternatively, check out Undelete Plus for Windows.

FileSalvage (OS X, $80): File Salvage for Mac will set you back some serious coin, but it's one of the best tools to pull data off of a connected hard drive in OS X. It can recover virtually any type of file on multiple partition types, and prides itself on its ability to recover from damaged drives and corrupt media. If you want an alternative, try Data Rescue for Mac ($100).

TestDisk (Win/OS X/Linux, Free): If you're not afraid of the command line, TestDisk is an open source utility that can run against almost any platform or partition type. It does a great job of recovering data quickly, and won't do unnecessary writes against the drive you're trying to recover from.

Bootable Linux distros for drive recovery: If you're not interested in messing around with apps (or paying for them), consider burning a bootable CD or USB key with BackTrack, Bart PE, or SpinRite on it, so you can boot to an OS that's not your primary drive, avoid writing or touching the drive you want to recover from, and run a host of recovery and forensics tools against that drive that are highly effective and completely free.?

A number of these tools can recover from formatted drives, especially if the data hasn't been overwritten. We've tackled this topic before, and used Knoppix as our bootable linux distro, but the steps apply to the ones we've mentioned as well. For more reading, check out this old but still largely accurate guide at Linux.com to recovering from formatted drives.

Remember, the less you work with the drive you want to recover data from, the better. As you read from the drive, you run the risk of exacerbating any damage it may have. The more you write to the drive, the more likely you are to overwrite something you want to recover. Bootable Linux distros??many of which have tools like TestDisk pre-installed (among other, more advanced tools)???are the best way to go if you're familiar with the method and if you're interested in recovering entire partitions, or making a non-bootable drive bootable again. If you're just looking for files and you know the drive was in a Windows system or a Mac, a stand-alone app is an easier way to go.

Step three: Get out the big guns (and your wallet)
Okay, so the drive is physically damaged, has been wiped and overwritten, or nothing else you try works and you really, really need the data off of it. You're even willing to pay a lot?for it. We're not going to ask why, but at this point it's time to call in the professionals.?

Pick up the phone and call the folks at DriveSavers and OnTrack to see what they can do for you. I've had good experiences with OnTrack. DriveSavers is well known and loved, both because they came to the rescue with free drive recovery services after September 11, 2001 and more recently helping Wired's Mat Honan recover from his epic hacking. Both companies do a superb job at pulling data even off of drives that have been formatted, overwritten, or even severely physically damaged. Keep in mind though that these services generally run in the thousand dollar-range, according to DriveSavers,?and higher.

If the drive is yours, or the data you get from the drive is valuable, we'd strongly suggest you make sure your data is backed up, both locally and online. After all, it's better to be able to get the data back quickly than have to jump through these hoops every time a drive fails. Remember, every hard drive will fail eventually, it's just a matter of time. Now go forth, use this knowledge for good, and recover!?

The use of Autoresponders in E-mail Marketing | Internet Contents

The Use of Autoresponders in E-Mail Marketing

If you aren?t sure what an autoresponder is, that?s okay because there are many who do not.

An Autoresponder is some software you can utilize to automatically reply to emails.It is also an email address. It is a time-efficient way to market a product or service.

There are two types of autoresponders:

1. Web Based

2. Non-Web Based Software

The operation of an autoresponder is relatively simple and is very easy to setup.

Heres how a web based autoresponder works:

The script sends a message to the email address your autoresponder is using then e-mail autoresponder program sends e-mail replies automatically.

Your autoresponder is a tremendous marketing tool! Once the autoresponder is in place, you just sit back and rake in the profits. It is the most powerful product and is less expensive. Setting it up is not complicated. It is up to you to decide which type you will use.

Here are two links for you to help:

http://www.marketingtips.com-You will find a software named Mailloop there. It is a Non web based software which can make your e-mail related activities much much easier and faster!http://www.prosender.com-This is a web based service. Even the guy who never saw computers in his life can use it!

An innovative road to use your autoresponder is to use it with your testimonials. Testemonials always build trust in visitors, so use them often! They must be essential part of your sales page too!

It could be an ezine or a newsletter, but the most important element of an autoresponder is the ability to keep in touch with your customers all year round. Using a free autoresponder is acceptable in certain situations, and of course, any autoresponder is better than no autoresponder at all so if you have only a few bucks to start this is not the service you must miss!

All webmasters involved in marketing make use of an automatic responder (autoresponder) for all the obvious reasons. It can send automatic personalized follow-ups. This automatic system gives the marketer the full time attention necessary to sell online. Time management is a key factor to success! You must automate as much processes as you can in your business to be able to focus on other parts of it, or to focus on a different business!

How to setup an autoresponder? It depends on the service or software you will use. But the thing I really want to talk here about is to be very careful and test! If you set it up the wrong way it will cost you money because your subscribers will know that you are not professional! So double test everything. It is worth your time, believe me! Anyway after setup, you won?t have to work with it anymore (hopefully). So it deserves a one time full attention!

The autoresponder is probably the best thing that ever happened to marketing. Get an objective review of their major features and decide which type of autoresponder is suitable for you. The autoresponder is the heart beat of any Internet business! If you want to run a professional and functioning website and want to be successful online, then an autoresponder is the ultimate tool!

I hope you enjoyed the article!

Online Gaming Sites Investing in Football Sponsorship : Liverpool ...

Manchester United recently signed a deal with bwin, the largest publicly-listed online gaming company in the world.? The deal will see the company serve as the gambling partner for the club and makes the United the third soccer club that the online gaming giant has signed.? However, bwin is not the only online gaming company to sign a sponsorship deal with a Premier League club.? In fact, it appears that football is a sport that many online companies are beginning to pour funds into.

Liverpool FC is another club that is not only sponsored by one, but two online gaming sites.? The club has deals with both 188Bet and with Paddy Power.? Paddy Power has long been controversial for their bet offerings.? For example, they once took bets on when American President Barack Obama would be assassinated.? Even with all the controversy, Paddy Power?s mobile revenues have increased to the point where they are comfortable reinvesting those dollars into football sponsorships.? Clearly they hope that the exposure from their deal help grow their brand further.

Chelsea FC has also gotten into the act of online gaming sponsorship.? Betsson and the club signed a deal where they serve as the team?s betting partner and even run their Gunner themed gaming site.? Ironically, up until about a week ago bwin actually owned the network that Betsson resides on but the ownership of the network recently changed so now Amaya actually is the parent company funding Betsson.

If you think about it, it makes sense that a lot of these companies are deciding to take a gamble, pun intended, on football sponsorship.? Football betting is huge business for these sites, so why not put out some cash to try and direct some of that traffic their way.? Diehard fans of these clubs are going to want to bet with the site for simple fact that they support the site.

The partnership is also beneficial to the squad sponsored as it helps to infuse cash into the team for starters, and next gives their fans a website to bet where they feel their bets are safe.? Liverpool is not going to partner with a site that is not legal and fully regulated.? As such, their fans can be sure that when they place a bet on the KOP that they will be paid.

As online gambling continues to grow in popularity, don?t be surprised to see more sites sponsor football squads.? It makes sound business sense for the companies investing the money and is of great benefit to the clubs sponsored.

Pakistani girl who spoke out against Taliban shot, wounded

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (Reuters) - Gunmen in Pakistan shot and seriously wounded on Tuesday a 14-year-old schoolgirl who rose to fame for speaking out against Taliban militants, authorities said.

Malala Yousufzai was shot in the head and neck when gunmen fired on her school bus in the Swat valley, northwest of the capital, Islamabad. Two other girls were also wounded, police said.

Yousufzai became famous for speaking out against the Pakistani Taliban at a time when even the government seemed to be appeasing the hardline Islamists.

The government agreed to a ceasefire with the Taliban in Swat in early 2009, effectively recognizing insurgent control of the valley whose lakes and mountains had long been a tourist attraction.

The Taliban set up courts, executed residents and closed girls' schools, including the one that Yousufzai attended. A documentary team filmed her weeping as she explained her ambition to be a doctor.

The army launched an offensive and retook control of Swat later that year, and Yousufzai later received the country's highest civilian award. She was also nominated for international awards for child activists.

Since then, she has received numerous threats. On Tuesday, gunmen arrived at her school and asked for her by name, witnesses told police. Yousufzai was shot when she came out of class and went to a bus.

Doctors were struggling to save her, said Lal Noor, a doctor at the Saidu Sharif Teaching Hospital in the valley's main town of Mingora.

Helpful Tips For Starting Out In Website Marketing | Make Money Blog

Helpful Tips For Starting Out In Website Marketing

In today?s global market, the Internet is a essential part of the strategies of any successful business. If you?re not sure how to start doing this, the advice in this article can help. The net is changing, so crucial, up-to-date marketing tactics like you?ll read below are vital to your overall success.

Be sure to offer unique promotions and rewards. You could, for instance, hide an ?Easter egg? on your website. As a reward, offer them merchandise discounts or free prizes. If your customers feel they are a part of your site, they will trust you more.

Read some psychological studies about web pages and marketing on the net. A person?s perception of a brand or product can be significantly impacted by psychological aspects of the website, such as the layout, color scheme and theme. Knowing what psychological triggers are effective in Website marketing can have a big impact on the success of your campaign.

While you may become frustrated, giving up on your web marketing dreams is a sure way to fail. Don?t give up too easily, you may be on the precipice of success. Make sure that all your priorities are set before you are going to launch a website that sells your products. This can require a lot of effort. That said, this work is what will make you successful in the end.

You can boost your own authenticity and standing by offering space on your website for major institutions to advertise in. If you demonstrate an association with big brands, customers will be likely to assign you some extra legitimacy. This can help you bring in more visitors and can help your standing as a reputable business.

As you may already know, people usually hold a lot of respect for those in authority. If you let people know who you are, they know you run the show. A title such as ?President? or ?CEO? holds weight within the business world.

A key to success in Internet marketing is understanding the competition. If you?re aware of what the competition is selling and how they are selling it, you can tweak your own products and services so that your offerings are superior. This is the only way to succeed in the very competitive world of Affiliate marketing.

Use ?guaranteed? in your text to enhance your readers? trust in your product or service offerings, and increase your marketing success. Your guarantee is good as long as you hold up to it, people do not want to feel like are risking anything. They work hard for their money, and a guarantee makes them feel comfortable about spending it.

Add your website as a link in each signature block you use. Are you registered at online forums? Add your site to your signature, so that people can see it every time you post. Every email you send out should have a link to your site within your signature. This is a passive way to promote your site all over the Internet, and it might even improve your search engine ranking. Type an interesting statement above the link that persuades them to click it.

In virtually every case, the core of a good Online marketing campaign is compelling content. Make sure you edit your site often so you get the right information out to customers. You may also find it useful to seek feedback from friends or family about your content. A fresh pair of eyes makes a huge difference. Lastly, make sure you check the grammar and spelling of your content in order to assure there are no errors.

Consider what a customer would think of your web page when you are reviewing it. Is your site user friendly? Is the material that you present legible? Is the process of ordering your products straightforward and fast? You don?t want to go through the work of leading customers to your website, only to have them leave because it is boring or difficult to use.

Make sure you utilize social media. Facebook fan pages will allow your customers the chance to post feedback others will see, this will get your name out there. Another excellent way to build up a conversation with your customers is through Twitter.

Remember every detail when it comes to each page on your site. Your site should have a title along with a description of your site in the corner of the page. Visitors will land on different pages depending on the searches that they perform, and if they can?t figure out what you?re site is about, they are likely to leave immediately.

Take the time to learn how to do web marketing on your own before giving in and using a service. Using auto responders, mass mailers and creating mailing lists tend to be easy once you learn how to do them. Plus, what you learn now will only help you more in the future.

Adding a limited-time offer to your product can be a powerful motivator for some consumers. This could be in the form of giving free shipping to the first thousand people who purchase from you or perhaps free gift-wrapping to anyone who purchases before a certain date. But it is important that urgency is created to get the people to act right away.

Think about incorporating words like ?simple? and ?easy? into your marketing strategy. People tend to dislike products that seem fussy or complicated, so describing them with phrases, such as ?easy to order? or ?simple assembly? makes customers more likely to try them out. Keep things easy for your customers to retain their business.

If you want to buy a great domain name for your website, it will cost you. It is likely that you will not be able to find a perfect match between your domain name and your business. If you have $1000 to $2000 to burn, you can likely find a domain that will work for you.

Internet promotion may seem difficult, but it has many similarities to traditional marketing. By incorporating all you have learned today, you can generate more profits for your business and be on your way to grabbing a hold of a lot more customers

Full Sail University Blog ? Spotted on Campus: Pop Star Debbie ...

Back before videos could go viral and artists could use the Internet to promote their music, Debbie Gibson toured the country performing her single ?Only in My Dreams? in nightclub after nightclub in order to gain exposure. It worked, and in 1988 she broke the Guinness World Record for being the youngest person ever to write, produce, and perform a #1 single.

Debbie was in town last week to serve as the Grand Marshall of Orlando?s ?Come Out with Pride? celebration, and she stopped by Full Sail?s Entertainment Business Auditorium to talk to students about the music business.

She was introduced by Music Business Course Director Elizabeth Neff, who is also her manager. After lecturing for about 25 minutes about her career, which has spanned the music industry, Broadway, film, and television, Debbie took questions from both students in the crowd and online students, who were watching via a GoTo Training web stream. She talked about her songwriting and recording process, artists she?d like to collaborate with, and the benefit of reality singing competition shows.?Afterward, Debbie stuck around to chat with students and pose for pictures with anyone who wanted one. She?s currently in the studio writing and working on new music.

Paradigm Millenia CT

The Paradigm Millennia CT looks like a typical 2.1 speaker, but its price?a whopping $699.99 (list)?implies otherwise. While it's quite an investment, assuming the Millenia CT is overpriced would be a mistake. In fact, it might even be fairly priced, as it's a near-masterpiece. The overall output is incredibly powerful?it can get far louder than you'll likely ever need, yet even at top volumes, there is never distortion. The sub's bass level can be adjusted to tailor the frequency response to your taste and environment, and the two stereo speakers are crisp, articulate, and full of detail. If you're serious about getting accurate, exciting sound out of your home theater or computer set-up, the Millenia delivers audio that erases any unease over the price tag within the first minute of use. It easily wins PCMag's Editors' Choice award.

Design
Each 7.8 by 4.5 by 5.8-inch stereo speaker for the Millenia CT features a glossy black enclosure housing two drivers?one 1-inch high frequency driver and one 4-inch bass/mid-range driver. The enclosure is mounted to a matte metallic stand, and the angle of each speaker is adjustable, which is crucial to maintaining a "sweet spot"?depending on the height of the speakers, you'll need to change the angle to point directly at ear-level. (The "sweet spot" is the area roughly equidistant from both left and right speaker, and roughly the distance the two speakers are from each other?in other words, an equilateral triangle is formed by the two speakers and the listener's head.)

The removable grilles consist of black cloth woven into metallic mesh, and they attach to the speakers magnetically. If you prefer the grilles off?and what self-respecting audio geek doesn't??the Millenia CT's drivers are good-looking and follow the entire system's black-and-metallic color scheme.

Unlike most square-shaped box subwoofers,?the Millenia CT's sits upright, and looks more like a PC tower. It's larger than the typical sub you'll see on a PC speaker system, but this system is also intended for home theater use. Beyond that, regardless of its height and depth (it measures 15.8 by 5 by 14 inches), its shape makes it far easier to fit into challenging spots. A rubberized stand is included for the sub, but it can also be set down in a horizontal position?in this case, you'd attach the four included bumper pads to cut down on vibrations and keep the sub in place.

The most disappointing facet of the system is the tiny, cheap-looking and -feeling remote. Membrane buttons control Volume, Mute, Power, and switch between the audio and digital inputs. This is the kind of remote you expect to see with a $200-or-below PC speaker system and seems destined to spend much of its life hidden in your sofa cushions. Simply put, $700 should buy you a much nicer remote. But hey, it works. The remote sensor is located on the front panel of the black Control Box, which also houses the audio inputs.

This leads us to our second disappointment: The limited number of audio inputs. The small connection box feeds audio to the connected subwoofer, which in turn distributes left and right audio to the two speakers connected to its back panel. (The sub's rear panel also houses a subwoofer volume knob with a midpoint indicator and the power connection for the system.) There is a digital optical connection to the input box, as well as a 3.5mm analog input for computers and most mobile audio devices, like a phone or tablet.

Having these two options is fantastic, but many modern systems include an extra Aux input on one of the satellite speakers, making it easier to connect a phone or tablet, while keeping the other inputs hardwired to, say, a digital television and a Blu-ray or PC audio output. If there were just one more option, the likelihood of needing to swap out connections on a regular basis would be drastically lowered. As it is, you'll probably find yourself switching the analog input between PC and phone or tablet fairly often.

However, the system's overall design is stellar. For instance, one peeve of mine is when included speaker cables are too short, but the two included for the satellite speakers here are very long, so you can get as much stereo separation as you desire. For larger rooms where you might sit farther away from the speakers, this is more important.

All necessary cables are included with the Millenia CT?power cable, 3.5mm stereo audio cable, the digital optical cable, a connection cable for the audio source box and the sub, and the aforementioned (lengthy) speaker wires.

Performance
Even if the Millenia CT were ugly and poorly designed, it would be still be a winner thanks to its excellent audio performance. This is what $700 should sound like. The lows, mids, and highs are all beautifully represented in crisp, clear detail. The sub-bass frequencies can be adjusted, but even at maximum volume on the sub, which is obviously not the recommended position, we never hear anything horrifyingly-muddy or distorted.

On deep bass tracks, like the Knife's "Silent Shout," playing from a connected iPhone, with both the system volume at maximum and the iPhone volume at max, there is zero distortion, regardless of whether the subwoofer volume level is cut out completely or set to maximum. At mid-way on the sub volume, the result is extremely loud, powerful, clean audio. It's highly doubtful that that you'll be listening at this level on a regular basis. At far more reasonable levels, the Millenia CT loses none of its perceived power?the bass is rich and resonant without ever getting muddled or compromising the overall balance of the system.

On instrumental and classical tracks, like John Adams' "The Chairman Dances," the Millenia CT sounds stunning. If you pump up the volume, you might as well be in the concert hall with the orchestra. The higher register wooden percussion and strings stand out beautifully, with every instrument occupying its own space. Adjusting the bass level if you want a bit more low-end presence is a possibility. But the midpoint, in a typical room, should be sufficient?the lower register brass, strings, and percussion have a depth that is simultaneously arresting and exciting, yet natural-sounding. Audiophiles and bass fiends alike can enjoy this system?they'll probably just keep the sub volume knob at different positions.

On modern mixes, from hip hop to rock to singer-songwriter tracks, the Millenia CT again proves a friend to just about any genre you can throw at it. Jay-Z and Kanye West's "No Church in the Wild" benefits from the highly capable subwoofer, which provides a strong resonance for the sub-bass synth sounds, while the mid-range and high-frequency drivers allow vocals and the attack of the drum loop to take center stage.

Bill Callahan's unique baritone vocals on his latest record, Apocalypse, are lent a pleasant depth by the system, but the real magic comes from the edge that the high-frequency drivers provide it. Grizzly Bear's latest record, Shields, has a plethora of exciting sounds, from massive kick drum hits to haunting synth tones and stunning vocal harmonies?the Millenia CT conveys it all, from the growl of an electric bass to the subtle picking of a guitar, with precision.

Beyond $700, we enter a realm of hi-fi speakers and audio components that you could consider semi-pro. At this $700 level, there are few consumer-level competitors?most 2.1 systems are far less. The Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin and Zeppelin Air ?are both priced in roughly the same territory, but their audio performance is not quite on par with the 2.1 Millenia CT, which is more powerful and can achieve stereo separation. The Zeppelins are both excellent in their own right, but they are also, to a certain extent, design pieces, and a good chunk of the Zeppelin Air's cost can be attributed to its Apple AirPlay wireless audio compatibility. Another good-looking, glossy black system, the Klipsch Gallery G-17 Air , offers a slightly more reserved approach than the Millenia CT does to bass response, but it, too, lacks much stereo separation and its price is also boosted by its AirPlay functionality.

Basically, it's hard for speaker docks and all-in-one systems to compete with 2.1 set-ups when it comes to sheer audio performance?they sound larger because they can occupy more space. The Focal XS ?is another PCMag favorite in the hi-fi 2.1 PC speaker category?its visual design is a bit less alluring, but it's also a quite powerful, exciting system, and though it's not cheap, it is a bit less than the Millenia CT. If all of these are far out of your budget, but you really want a 2.1 system for your PC, phone, or home theater, the Harman Kardon SoundSticks III are a classic design, with both visual allure and strong audio performance. If you can afford it, however, the Paradigm Milennia CT will not disappoint. It's an easy choice for Editors' Choice, and I wish I had one in my house.

New Soda Vending Machines To Display Calories, Increase ...

NEW YORK ? As criticism over sugary sodas intensifies, Coke, Pepsi and Dr Pepper are rolling out new vending machines that will put calorie counts right at your fingertips.

The counts will be on the buttons of the machines, which will also feature small posted messages reminding the thirsty that they can choose a low-calorie drink. The vending machines will launch in Chicago and San Antonio municipal buildings in 2013 before appearing nationally.

The move comes ahead of a new regulation that would require restaurant chains and vending machines to post calorie information as early as next year, although the timetable and specifics for complying with that requirement are still being worked out.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, for example has proposed a less-stringent amendment that would allow vending machines to post the information on a poster on the side of the machine, notes Mike Jacobson, executive director for the Center for Science in the Public Interest, which advocates for food safety and nutrition.

The industry's announcement Monday shows posting calories right on machines is perfectly feasible, he said.

"This would be an important step forward," Jacobson said. "Currently, people don't think about calories when they go up to a vending machine. Having the calories right on the button will help them make choices."

The American Beverage Association, which represents Coca-Cola Co., PepsiCo Inc. and Dr Pepper Snapple Group Inc., said the machines will increase the availability of lower-calorie drinks and remind customers to consider alternatives with messages such as "Try a Low-Calorie Beverage."

"We have market research that says consumers really like this ? they like choice, they like the ability to make choices," said Susan Neely, president of the American Beverage Association.

But she said the group has not done any research on whether providing such information impacts the choices people actually end up making. Notably, the ABA has aggressively fought New York City's ban on the sale of large sugary drinks, as well as measures in other municipalities that would tax sodas.

A mock-up of the new machine provided by Coca-Cola showed 20-ounce bottles of its flagship drink and Sprite inside vending machines, with small labels on the glass stating "240 calories."

The move comes as the soda industry has come under increasing fire for fueling rising obesity rates. Last month, New York City approved a first-in-the-nation plan to prohibit the sale of sugary drinks over 16 ounces in the city's restaurants, movie theaters and stadiums. The beverage industry aggressively fought the measure, saying it takes away customer choice.

This November, voters in Richmond, Calif. will also decide whether to approve a penny-per-ounce tax on sugary drinks.

Soft drink makers are also dealing with shifting consumer habits. Soda consumption per person has been declining in the U.S. since 1998, according to the Beverage Digest. The decline is partly the result of the growing number of drink options, such as flavored waters, bottled teas and sports drinks.

As a result, Coke, Pepsi and Dr Pepper are focusing on developing more diet drinks, as well as expanding into other types of drinks to reduce their reliance on sodas.

Coca-Cola, based in Atlanta, notes that it already provides calorie information on the front of its drinks rather than just on the nutrition panel on the back.

The decision to post calorie information follows the Supreme Court's decision this summer to uphold President Barack Obama's health care overhaul, which includes a regulation that would require restaurant chains and with more than 20 locations and vending machines to post calorie information. Last month, McDonald's Corp. began posting calorie information on its menus nationwide.

There is no timetable for when all vending machines will be converted. Coke, Pepsi and Dr Pepper sometimes work with third-party vending machine operators; Neely said the companies will work with in those cases to convert machines.

Vending machines account for about 13 percent of sales volume, a figure that has remained relatively unchanged in recent years, according to Beverage Digest.

Although other factors such as a lack of physical activity and overeating also contribute, soda consumption is often identified for playing a role in rising obesity rates.

Last month, the New England Journal of Medicine published a decades-long study of more than 33,000 Americans that showed sugary beverages interact with genes that affect weight, meaning they are especially harmful to people who are hereditarily predisposed to weight gain.

Two other major experiments have found that giving children and teens calorie-free alternatives to the sugary drinks they usually consume leads to less weight gain.

Taken together, scientists say the results strongly suggest that sugary drinks cause people to pack on the pounds.

Bonnie Sashin, who works as a communications director for a nonprofit in Brookline, Mass., says she stays away from sugary drinks and "empty calories," limiting herself to a can of Diet Dr Pepper or Diet Coke about twice a month. But she thought the move to display calorie information on vending machines was a step in the right direction.

"I think it's a positive trend," Sashin said. "Anything that helps us be more educated about calories is a good thing."

Concert raises ?2,000 for church

A CONCERT to help repair a vandalised church has raised more than ?2,000.

St Mary?s Church, in Andover, hosted Rule Britannia on Saturday with Test Valley Brass.

The evening ? which more than 150 people attended ? was in support of St Mary?s and Andover Rebuild Together (SMART), a campaign to repair the church building and to make it inclusive for community groups.

Alec Grimsey, of Test Valley Brass, said: ?The concert included Pomp and Circumstance, Jerusalem and Rule B r i t a n n i a where the audience was delighted to join in, wave flags and sing along.

?Test Valley Brass also performed the p i e c e H i g h l a n d C a t h e d ra l , which was made famous by the film Four Weddings and A Funeral, which highlighted the talents of 15-year-old Dermot MacDonald on bagpipe.?

Peter Heslop, chairman of Test Valley Brass, said: ?The proms concert was simply outstanding. Never before can I remember where the audience has had so much fun and enjoyment while raising funds for such a wonderful cause.

?Test Valley Brass takes great pride from its active role in the community and is only too pleased to help raise funds for such a magnificent cause.?

T h e SMART project was developed by church and community leaders after the repeated theft of lead and subsequent damage to the interior of the church and its pipe organ.

It aims to adapt the facility into a multi-function building that will incorporate a place of worship and a function area for community events.

Already money has been borrowed to enable many areas of the church to undergo essential repairs, including a new heating system, repair of the organ and to several parts of the roof.

The Rev Canon John Harkin, vicar of St Mary?s Church and area dean of Andover Deanery, said: ?We are greatly encouraged by all who came to the concert to help us raise funds for St Mary?s and Test Valley Brass, but also in support of the wonderful instrumentalists and singers, as well as all the volunteers who have worked countless hours helping to put the event together.

?The acoustics in this church are absolutely wonderful for concerts like these.?

Using Live SDK in Windows 8 ? C# + JavaScript

Introduction

Live SDK provides a set of controls and APIs that enable applications to integrate single sign-on (SSO) with Microsoft accounts and access information from SkyDrive, Hotmail, and Windows Live Messenger on Windows Phone and Windows 8.

Live SDK support several platforms such as: iOS, Android and of course Windows Phone and Windows 8 applications using C# and JS.

In this demo I?ll show how to use Live SDK with Windows 8, so in order to follow this article you need to have the following installed:

  1. Windows 8 ? Download
  2. Live SDK -Live SDK downloads

Also you can assist Interactive Live SDK?

Step 1: Building Our App??

I?ve create a C#\JavaScript Blank App called ? ?LiveSdkDemo?, and add a reference to ?Live SDK? we just installed.

Step 2: Adding a ?Sign In? Button?

Before we can do anything with Live SDK we first need to ?Sign In? using our Window Live ID. To do that we need to add the ?SignInButton? control coming with Live SDK.? But just before we'll add the control let's talk about a very important thing when using Live SDK:?

Scopes:?

Before your app makes requests of the Live Connect APIs to work with Live Connect info, in most cases you must get permission from the user to access that info or to create new objects on behalf of the user. In the Live Connect APIs, this permission is called a scope. Each scope grants a different permission level.?

Live SDK Scope Types?

In this demo I?m using three Scopes:?

  • wl.signin?- ?Single sign-in behavior. With single sign-in, users who are already signed in to Live Connect are also signed in to your website.
  • wl.basic?- Read access to a user's basic profile info. Also enables read access to a user's list of contacts.
  • wl.skydrive_update?- Read and write access to a user's files stored in SkyDrive.
?
Beside Scopes I've also registered ?onSessionChange? event this will let us know when we made a successful connection and when we received an Sign In error.?

JavaScript?

I've?created a html element called ? ?signin?, in JS we need to populate the element from code.?

<p id="signin"></p>

Now just before we can populate the ?signin? element with Live SDK button we need to call WL.init with the Scopes for this session, this function initializes the JavaScript library. An application must call this function before making other function calls to the library except for subscribing/unsubscribing to events.?

WL.Event.subscribe("auth.login", onLoginComplete);
 WL.Event.subscribe("auth.sessionChange", onSessionChange);
 WL.init({ scope: ["wl.signin", "wl.basic", "wl.skydrive_update"] });
 WL.ui({
     name: "signin",
     element: "signin"
 });

C#?

So I?ve added a using to Microsoft.Live.Controls and add ?SignInButton? control.?

I?ve also add a TextBlock to display any errors coming from the SignIn operations.??

<Page
     x:Class="LiveSdkDemo.MainPage"
     xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation"
     xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml"
     xmlns:local="using:LiveSdkDemo"
     xmlns:d="http://schemas.microsoft.com/expression/blend/2008"
     xmlns:mc="http://schemas.openxmlformats.org/markup-compatibility/2006"
     xmlns:live="using:Microsoft.Live.Controls"
     mc:Ignorable="d">

     <Grid Background="{StaticResource ApplicationPageBackgroundThemeBrush}">
         <live:SignInButton x:Name="btnSignin" Scopes="wl.signin wl.basic wl.skydrive_update"
                            Branding="Skydrive" SessionChanged="OnSessionChanged"
                            VerticalAlignment="Top" Width="141" HorizontalAlignment="Left"
 			   Margin="100,100,0,0" />

         <TextBlock x:Name="txtStatus" HorizontalAlignment="Center" Margin="0"
  	TextWrapping="Wrap" VerticalAlignment="Center" Foreground="Red" FontSize="24"/>
     </Grid>
 </Page>

Now let?s run our application and see what?s happens.

You?ll notice that you receive the following error:

"The app is not configured correctly to use Live Connect services. To configure your app, please follow the instructions on http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=220871."?

The reason is before we begin building this app, you need to register it with Windows Live. ?You can register your app by going to the application management site.

Then you have two steps in order to register your application:

1. You need to enter the application name and publisher (you can find it in ?Package.appxmanifest? located under project solution).??

?

After you click ?I accept?, we?ll receive a new ?Package name? and Client secret (I?ll talk about this in later posts).

?

For now all you need to do is copying the ?Package name? from the site and adding it instead the current in Package.appxmanifest.?

?

Now let?s run the application again, and after you click the ?Sign In? button you?ll see this message: (this will only appear one time)?

?

After clicking ?Yes? you should see that ?Sign In? changed to:

?

Step 3: Getting User Data?

After we made a successful Sign In we can start using Live SDK, the first thing I?ll show is how to get user data from his Live Account.

JavaScript?

Using global WL (Windows Live) object we?ll can call ?api? function to perform Ajax Requests to LiveSDK REST services. You can always use other Ajax libraries to use LiveSDK REST just call this url passing the access token:?

https://apis.live.net/v5.0/me/albums?access_token=ACCESS_TOKEN?

  • path - Required. Contains the path to the REST API object. For information on specifying paths for REST objects, see REST reference.
  • method - Optional. An HTTP method that specifies the action required for the API call. These actions are standard REST API actions: "COPY", "GET", "MOVE", "PUT", "POST", and "DELETE".
  • body - Optional. A JSON object that specifies the REST API request body. The body property is used only for "POST" and "PUT" requests.?
WL.api("me", function (data) {
     $("#txtStatus").innerHTML = "Full Name:" + data.name +
         "<br/>First Name:" + data.first_name +
         "<br/>Last Name:" + data.last_name +
         "<br/>Profile Link:" + data.link +
         "<br/>Gender:" + data.gender +
         "<br/>Locale:" + data.locale;
     $("#btnBrowse").disabled = false;
 });

Add getting my profile picture, same goes here first define the user I want to get his picture and then the string ?picture??

WL.api("me/picture", function (data) {
     $("#userImg").src = data.location;
 });

Full Code:?

function onSessionChange(response) {
     var session = WL.getSession();
     if (!session.error) {
         WL.api("me", function (data) {
             $("#txtStatus").innerHTML = "Full Name:" + data.name +
                 "<br/>First Name:" + data.first_name +
                 "<br/>Last Name:" + data.last_name +
                 "<br/>Profile Link:" + data.link +
                 "<br/>Gender:" + data.gender +
                 "<br/>Locale:" + data.locale;
             $("#btnBrowse").disabled = false;
         });
         WL.api("me/picture", function (data) {
             $("#userImg").src = data.location;
         });
     }
     else {
         $("#txtStatus").textContent = session.error.message;
     }
 }

C#?

Using?LiveConnectClient object (using our Access Token) we get the following abilities:?

  • GET?Returns a representation of a resource.
  • POST?Adds a new resource to a collection.
  • PUT?Updates a resource at the location pointed by the URL or creates a new resource, if it doesn't exist.
  • DELETE?Deletes a resource.
  • MOVE?Moves the location of a resource.
  • COPY?Duplicates a resource.?

For now I?ll use GetAsync method passing the string ?me? telling Live SDK I want to receive my information.?

this.liveClient = new LiveConnectClient(e.Session);
 var myData = await this.liveClient.GetAsync("me");
 txtStatus.Text = string.Format("Full Name:{0}\nFirst Name:{1}\nLast Name:{2}\nProfile Link:{3}\nGender:{4}\nLocale:{5}", myData.Result["name"],
                                     myData.Result["first_name"],
                                     myData.Result["last_name"],
                                     myData.Result["link"],
                                     myData.Result["gender"],
                                     myData.Result["locale"]);

Add getting my profile picture, same goes here first define the user I want to get his picture and then the string ?picture??

var myPic = await this.liveClient.GetAsync("me/picture");
 var bmp = new BitmapImage(new Uri(myPic.Result["location"].ToString()));
 imgProfile.Source = bmp;

Full Code:?

private LiveConnectClient liveClient;
 private async void OnSessionChanged(object sender, LiveConnectSessionChangedEventArgs e)
 {
     if (e.Status == LiveConnectSessionStatus.Connected)
     {
         this.liveClient = new LiveConnectClient(e.Session);
         var myData = await this.liveClient.GetAsync("me");
         txtStatus.Text = string.Format("Full Name:{0}\nFirst Name:{1}\nLast Name:{2}\nProfile Link:{3}\nGender:{4}\nLocale:{5}", myData.Result["name"],
                                             myData.Result["first_name"],
                                             myData.Result["last_name"],
                                             myData.Result["link"],
                                             myData.Result["gender"],
                                             myData.Result["locale"]);
         var myPic = await this.liveClient.GetAsync("me/picture");
         var bmp = new BitmapImage(new Uri(myPic.Result["location"].ToString()));
         imgProfile.Source = bmp;
     }
     else
     {
         if (e.Error != null)
         {
             txtStatus.Text = e.Error.Message;
         }
     }
 }

Accessing a user's public info?

There is an exception to the rule that you must get the permission from the user before you can access his or her info: your app can access a user's publicly available info without requesting any scope. Public info includes the user's ID, first and last names, display name, gender, locale, and picture. The user's Messenger friends list is also available if the user has elected to make it public.?

For example:?I've?changed ?me? to my friend Gil Fink Live Id and here is the result:?

Step 4: Uploading File To User Folder

In this part we?ll see how to upload a file to SkyDrive using Live SDK, first I?ve added to more buttons and a progress bar so we can see the upload progress.

The first button for picking a file and the second one for starting the upload process.

Pick a File??

Because of SkyDrive file restrictions you can upload any file you want (you basically can but you need to change file extension to txt, doc or any kind of picture extension), so right now?I've?create a File Picker just for text files and word.?

JavaScript?

function openFile() {
         var openPicker = new Windows.Storage.Pickers.FileOpenPicker();
     openPicker.viewMode = Windows.Storage.Pickers.PickerViewMode.list;
     openPicker.suggestedStartLocation = Windows.Storage.Pickers.PickerLocationId.documentsLibrary;
             openPicker.fileTypeFilter.replaceAll([".txt", ".docs", ".doc"]);
         openPicker.pickSingleFileAsync().then(function (file) {
         if (file) {
                         _file = file;
             $("#btnStart").disabled = false;
             WinJS.log && WinJS.log("Picked photo: " + file.name, "sample", "status");
         } else {
             _file = undefined;
             $("#btnStart").disabled = true;
             WinJS.log && WinJS.log("Operation cancelled.", "sample", "status");
         }
     });
 }

C#?

private async void btnPickFile_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e)
 {
     var fp = new FileOpenPicker();
     fp.ViewMode = PickerViewMode.List;
     fp.SuggestedStartLocation = PickerLocationId.DocumentsLibrary;
     fp.FileTypeFilter.Add(".txt");
     fp.FileTypeFilter.Add(".doc");
     fp.FileTypeFilter.Add(".docx");
     var file = await fp.PickSingleFileAsync();
     if (file != null)
     {
         _file = file;
         txtFilePath.Text = file.Path;
         btnStartUpload.IsEnabled = true;
     }
     else
     {
         _file = null;
         txtFilePath.Text = string.Empty;
         btnStartUpload.IsEnabled = false;
     }
 }

Start Upload

JavaScript??

To Upload file using Live SDK we?ll use - WL.backgroundUpload method.

  • path - Required. The path to the file to upload.
  • file_name - Optional. The name of the file to upload.
  • file_input (StorageFile) - Optional. The file input object to read the file from.
  • stream_input - Optional. The file input stream to read the file from.
  • overwrite - Optional. Indicates whether the uploaded file should overwrite an existing copy. Specify true or "true" to overwrite, false or "false" to not overwrite and for theWL.backgroundUpload method call to fail, or "rename" to not overwrite and enable SkyDrive to assign a new name to the uploaded file.

backgroundUpload returns a Promise so we can implement code for onError and onProgress (to update the progress bar)?

WL.backgroundUpload({
     path: "me/skydrive",
     file_name: _file.fileName,
     file_input: _file,
     overwrite: "true" }).then(function (args) {
     $("#txtStatus").textContent = "Upload Completed!";
     toggle(true);
 },
 function (err) {
     $("#txtStatus").textContent = e.response;
     $("#pb").className = "hidden";
 },
 function (e) {
     $("#pb").value = Math.round(e.progressPercentage);
 });

C#?

Once we got a file to upload we?ll first create new Progress object of type LiveOperationProgress using this object we?ll see the upload progress and assign it to our ProgressBar.?

In order to upload the file we need to get the file Stream so just call ? OpenStreamForReadAsync to get file stream.?

Last we?ll use a built in method ?BackgroundUploadAsync?, passing the following parameters:?

  • Upload Location
  • File Name
  • File Stream
  • Overwrite Option?
  • Cancellation Token
  • Progress Handler?
private CancellationTokenSource cts;
 private async void btnStartUpload_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e)
 {
     if (_file == null) return;
     btnPickFile.IsEnabled = btnStartUpload.IsEnabled = false;
     txtStatus.Text = string.Format("Uploading Backup...");
     this.pb.Value = 0;
     var progressHandler = new Progress<LiveOperationProgress>(
         (progress) => { this.pb.Value = progress.ProgressPercentage; });
     var stream = await _file.OpenStreamForReadAsync();
     this.cts = new CancellationTokenSource();
     LiveOperationResult result =
         await this.liveClient.BackgroundUploadAsync("/me/skydrive", _file.Name, stream.AsInputStream(), OverwriteOption.Overwrite, this.cts.Token, progressHandler);
     txtStatus.Text = string.Format("Upload Completed!");
     btnPickFile.IsEnabled = btnStartUpload.IsEnabled = true;
 }

Result

Step 5: Get SkyDrive Files

Now before downloading files from SkyDrive you need to know their ID, name is not enough for download using Live SDK, so to makes things simpler let?s first get all files from our SkyDrive.

Getting all files using Live SDK will also bring the file ID so we?ll be able to save those files locally.?

JavaScript?

I?ve added a ListView to our body to present the files.

<div id="fileTemplate" data-win-control="WinJS.Binding.Template">
 <div class="file">
     <span data-win-bind="textContent: id"></span>
     -
     <span data-win-bind="textContent: type"></span>
     -
     <span data-win-bind="textContent: name"></span>
     -
     <span data-win-bind="textContent: created_time"></span>
 </div>
 <div id="fileList" data-win-control="WinJS.UI.ListView"
     data-win-options="{ selectionMode: 'single',layout: { type: WinJS.UI.ListLayout},
                         itemTemplate:select('#fileTemplate')}">
 </div>

Now all we need to do is using the ?api? method passing ?me/skydrive/files?, this will return all folder and files under my main folder. Once we?received?the files list from the server?I've?converted the response into List and assigned its dataSource to out ListView itemDataSource property.?

function getFiles() {
     toggle(false);
     WL.api("me/skydrive/files", function (response) {
         var skyDriveFiles = response.data;
         var dataList = new WinJS.Binding.List(skyDriveFiles);
         var files = $('#fileList').winControl;
         files.itemDataSource = dataList.dataSource;
         toggle(true);
     });
 }

C#?

First?I've?create new object called ? SkyDriveFile to save the important data we get from SkyDrive.?

public class SkyDriveFile
 {
     public string ID { get; set; }
     public string Name { get; set; }
     public string Type { get; set; }
     public string Link { get; set; }
     public DateTime CreationDate { get; set; }
     public SkyDriveFile(dynamic fileData)
     {
         this.Name = fileData.name;
         this.ID = fileData.id;
         this.Link = fileData.link;
         this.Type = fileData.type;
         this.CreationDate = Convert.ToDateTime(fileData.created_time);
     }
 }

I've?added a ListView to our XAML to present the files, now all we need to do is using the GetAsync method passing ?me/skydrive/files?, this will return all folder and files under my main folder.

private async void btnGetFiles_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e)
 {
     this.cts = new CancellationTokenSource();
     LiveOperationResult Aresult =
             await this.liveClient.GetAsync("me/skydrive/files", this.cts.Token);
     var fileList = new List<SkyDriveFile>();
     dynamic data = Aresult.Result;
     foreach (var dd in data)
     {
         foreach (var d in dd.Value)
         {
             fileList.Add(new SkyDriveFile(d));
         }
     }
     listFiles.ItemsSource = fileList;
 }

Result?

Step 6: Download File

Now that we got all file ids we can proceed to downloading them into our machine.?

JavaScript??

To download a file using Live SDK we?ll use the ?backgroundDownload? method almost in the same way we use the ?backgroundUpload? method, but is time we need to pass the file id that we want to download and adding ?/content? after it.?

First let?s get the selected file from the fileList and create new file under Temp folder with the same name.?

list.selection.getItems().then(function (selectedFiles) {
     var fileToDownload = selectedFiles[0].data;
     list.selection.clear();
         Windows.Storage.ApplicationData.current.temporaryFolder.createFileAsync(fileToDownload.name,
         Windows.Storage.CreationCollisionOption.replaceExisting).then(function (localFile) {

Now that we have new file under temp folder we can start the?download:

var properties = { path: fileToDownload.source, file_output: localFile, overwrite: "true" };
 WL.backgroundDownload(properties).then(function (args) {
                  $("#txtStatus").textContent = "Download Completed! - " + localFile.path;
                  toggle(true);
               }, function (err) {
                  $("#txtStatus").textContent = e.response;
                  $("#pb").className = "hidden";
               }, function (progress) {
                  $("#pb").value = Math.round(progress.progressPercentage);
               });
           });

C#

To download a file using Live SDK we?ll use the ?BackgroundDownloadAsync? method almost in the same way we use the ?BackgroundUploadAsync? method, but is time we need to pass the file id that we want to download and adding ?/content? after it.
I?ve create a new file under Temp folder and using Stream.CopyToAsync method I?ve copied the stream I got from SkyDrive into the new file I?ve created.?

private async void btnDownloadFile_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e)
 {
     this.pb.Value = 0;
     var progressHandler = new Progress<LiveOperationProgress>(
         (progress) => { this.pb.Value = progress.ProgressPercentage; });
     var file = listFiles.SelectedItem as SkyDriveFile;
     txtStatus.Text = string.Format("Downloading Backup...");
     LiveDownloadOperationResult result =
         await this.liveClient.BackgroundDownloadAsync(string.Format("{0}/content", file.ID), this.cts.Token, progressHandler);
     var stream = await result.GetRandomAccessStreamAsync();
     var temp = Windows.Storage.ApplicationData.Current.TemporaryFolder;
         var localFile = await temp.CreateFileAsync(file.Name, CreationCollisionOption.GenerateUniqueName);
         var fileStream = await localFile.OpenStreamForWriteAsync();
         await stream.AsStreamForRead().CopyToAsync(fileStream);
     await fileStream.FlushAsync();
     fileStream.Dispose();
     stream.Dispose();
     txtStatus.Text = string.Format("File Save! - " + localFile.Path);
 }

May I reserve the Imagination Key?

I would love to reserve the Light Key if I may. Also, are we allowed to play multiple characters?
